Objectives

The Trades and Apprenticeship Project will enhance the capacity of the Aboriginal Human Resource Council (AHRC) to invest in, and leverage the expertise and resources of key partners and stakeholders in Canada’s trades and apprenticeship system. It will also enable the Council to work more effectively with partners at a national level to promote and increase Aboriginal participation in trades and apprenticeship programs and employment. The six objectives of the project are as follows:

  • Increase Aboriginal participation in targeted trades employment and apprenticeship programs by creating, strengthening and leveraging partnerships and collaborative networks with key stakeholders including: Aboriginal Human Resource Development Agreement Holders (AHRDAs), sector councils, colleges, trades associations and unions, provincial apprenticeship authorities and the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF).
  • Increase the capacity of trades and apprenticeship stakeholders to respond to industry demand for a skilled Aboriginal workforce by sharing planning and project expertise and by promoting workplace models of best practice in the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal workers participating in trades and apprenticeship systems.
  • Increase Aboriginal awareness and knowledge of trades and apprenticeship opportunities in Canada through the development of a coordinated communications strategy.
